Growing a vegetable garden is fun, one of my summertime passions. It is end of January and I am really starting to miss vegetables from my garden. I am thinking I better get my pepper and tomato seeds on order, so I can get them started for spring planting. I love going out to the garden and swooping up an armful of veggies and I am sure missing doing that today. I grow lots of different kinds of vegetables, the more the better. I preserve vegetables by drying, canning and freezing. They are great but still not the same as fresh. I can keep carrots, potatoes and onions, quite awhile in their fresh state, as we still have some of those left from last summers’ garden. I plant as many different kinds of vegetables that I can, filling my garden plot up to the brim. I grow, tomatoes, peppers, sweet corn, popcorn, carrots, potatoes, lots of peppers and so much more. I also like to plant flowers to attract the good bugs and have them for fresh cuttings to bring into the house. Gardening is such a pleasure, I enjoy planting the seeds, plants, and bulbs and watching them emerge from the soil and grow to bear the veggies, I love to eat.
Fresh cauliflower is so good and quite easy to grow. Here is Northeast Nebraska, I like to plant it mid April, so it is ready before the extreme heat of summer hits. Plant it about 2-3 foot apart in a row. Watch if for aphids when it is small and as it starts to form heads, watch for the green cabbage worms. I used garden lime instead of the regular bug chemicals. It works pretty good and it also works to deter rabbits.
Oohh fresh greens in the spring are the best. I like to plant lettuce, spinach and romaine mid April as well. It grows best when temperatures are cool. I will plant them several times thru the spring, summer and fall. They also germinate better when temperatures are cooler.
always like to try something new, this year I tried garden huckleberry. It makes a nice good flavored jam or is good to mix with other berries in jams.
